Dance your way to better lung health

Breathe Easy Week is recognised from June 17th to June 23rd this year, aiming to raise awareness and focus on lung health.

The initiative was launched by The British Lung Foundation, who suggest that taking part in activities like dancing can help manage possible lung conditions and can improve overall life quality!

So, to help raise awareness around lung health, which we believe is super important, we’re sharing a few ways dancing can contribute to healthier lungs below.

How does dancing affect the lungs?

First and foremost, dancing is an aerobic exercise, meaning that it focuses on the breathing system, as well as the heart. Unlike other types of exercises such as strength or balance, aerobic has a greater impact on the lungs. As you begin aerobic exercise, your breathing will become faster and deeper.

So now you may be wondering how this can improve lung health…

It strengthens breathing muscles

The diaphragm is your primary breathing muscle. It’s responsible for around 80 per cent of your breathing, so you want this to be strong! Dancing is one type of exercise that can help strengthen this core breathing muscle because as we breath deeper, we take in more oxygen to feed and strengthen the muscles, including the diaphragm.

It improves lung capacity

Lung capacity simply refers to the total amount of oxygen the body can use, so the greater the lung capacity, the less likely you are to feel short of breath in a small amount of time exercising. Stronger breathing muscles equal better lung capacity, which leads to us being able to exercise for longer and generally enjoy life to the full!

It helps to remove toxins

Engaging in aerobic exercises like dancing can strengthen the body’s ability to remove harmful waste product from the lungs. Sometimes carbon dioxide can build up in the lungs if not enough oxygen is entering, which can in some cases lead to respiratory failure. But when we dance and begin to breathe faster and deeper, more oxygen is taken in and more carbon dioxide is released.
